Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)

What is this?

Mars Orbiter Mission is India's first interplanetary mission to planet Mars with an orbiter craft designed to orbit Mars in an elliptical orbit. The Mission is primarily technological mission considering the critical mission operations and stringent requirements on propulsion and other bus systems of spacecraft.

Mission Objectives

One of the main objectives of the first Indian mission to Mars is to develop the technologies required for design, planning, management and operations of an interplanetary mission.

Following are the major objectives of the mission:

A. Technological Objectives:

Design and realization of a Mars orbiter with a capability to survive and perform Earth bound manoeuvres, cruise phase of 300 days, Mars orbit insertion / capture, and on-orbit phase around Mars.
Deep space communication, navigation, mission planning and management.
Incorporate autonomous features to handle contingency situations.

B. Scientific Objectives:

Exploration of Mars surface features, morphology, mineralogy and Martian atmosphere by indigenous scientific instruments.

India registered a thrilling 57-run victory over Australia in the seventh and final One-Day International (ODI) at Bangalore. This win enabled the hosts clinch the high-scoring seven-match series 3-2 with two matches being washed out.

# Rohit Sharma became the third batsman to score a double ton in One-Day International (ODI) cricket after Sachin Tendulkar (200 not out) and Virender Sehwag (219).

# Rohit Sharma scored highest number of sixes ever hit in One-Day International (ODI) cricket. He hit 16 sixes beating Shane Watson’s record of 15 sixes against Bangladesh at Dhaka in 2011.

# This was the second time Virat Kohli was run-out for a duck. The first time he got out was against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2010. Back then, Rohit got to his century off 114 deliveries as he did on Saturday.

# Rohit scored most runs in a bilateral series — 491. Bailey finished second with 478 runs.

# The 38 sixes hit on Saturday is the most hit in a match beating the previous record of 32 in the New Zealand vs India game at Christchurch in 2009.

# 464 runs (59 boundaries and 38 sixes) came in boundaries and sixes is the joint second for the most number of runs scored in ODI cricket. The record is 504 (87 boundaries and 26 sixes) in a game played between South Africa and Australia at Johannesburg in 2006. India were involved in a game against Sri Lanka in 2009 where 80 boundaries and 24 sixes were hit.

# George Bailey was out run-out for the second time in his ODI career. Incidentally when he was out for the first time (vs Sri lanka at The Oval in 2013) he had scored four as he did on Saturday. 

# Glenn Maxwell’s 18-ball half-century is a joint Australian record. He shares the record with Simon O’Donnell. Maxwell’s effort was the fastest half-century against India beating Shahid Afridi’s 20-ball fifty.

# James Faulkner scored a 57-ball century which is the Australian record. The previous record-holder was Matthew Hayden who had scored a 66-ball ton against South Africa at St. Kitts in the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

# It was the third best innings (116) batting at No. 7 after MS Dhoni’s 139 (Asia XI vs Africa XI in 2007) and Shaun Pollock’s 130 (Africa XI vs Asia XI in 2007).

# This is the second fastest ton against India. Shahid Afridi had scored a 45-ball century against India at Kanpur in 2005.

# R Vinay Kumar became the fifth bowler after Mick Lewis, Martin Snedden, Tim Southee and Brian Vitori to concede more than 100 runs in ODIs. Vinay is the first Indian to achieve this feat. The previous record was held by Zaheer Khan against Sri Lanka at Rajkot in 2009.

#Vinay conceded 17 sixes in the series which were the most.

# The 115-run stand between Faulkner and Clint McKay is the highest ninth-wicket stand for Australia and the fourth best ever in ODI cricket.
